The Difference Between Botox and Fillers

The difference between Botox and Dermal Fillers | MEDfacials, Truro

If you’ve been thinking about ways to rejuvenate and revive your skin, then Botox and fillers may have crossed your mind. But what’s the difference between the two, and how do they really work?

Two of the most popular and effective ways to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and enhance your natural glow, Botox and fillers are types of injectable beauty treatments. Both delivered using a needle with minimal discomfort, they are injected into target areas of the skin: fillers especially to support facial structure, volumize the skin and features, and Botox to reduce fine lines and wrinkles in the upper part of the face.

That said, though they are often used to achieve similar goals, they are not the same thing.

In essence, the fundamental difference between Botox and dermal fillers is that Botox is a neuromodulator that relaxes muscles to prevent and smooth wrinkles. Meanwhile, dermal fillers work by plumping the skin to add definition and create a more youthful look. Happily, both are non-surgical procedures that require little downtime. And, when carried out by a professional, can achieve beautiful, long-lasting and natural results to make you look and feel gorgeous.

So which one is right for you?

All About Botox

One of the most common misconceptions about Botox is the name. In fact, Botox itself isn’t a treatment, but a brand name. Botox actually derives from “botulinum toxin”, a neurotoxic protein. And, it is this neurotoxic protein that is injected into the facial skin to relax specific muscles. It sounds scary, but it isn’t. A type of neuromodulator, Botox is one of a number of brands (including Azzalure, Bocotoure, Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau) that is used to block signals from the nerves to the muscles and reduce muscle movement in the face. In turn, this not only prevents deeper wrinkles from naturally forming on the face over time, but also helps to smooth out existing fine lines too to turn back the hands of time. Perfect for targeting wrinkles on most areas of the face (including frown lines, crow’s feet and bunny lines), Botox can also be used to treat things like teeth grinding (Bruxism), migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and many more.

Results and Side Effects of Botox

As the market leader, at MEDfacials we use Botox and Bocotoure as part of our anti-wrinkle treatments and every injection is carried out by one of our expert medically trained aesthetic practitioners. Delivered by Dr Stolte or one of our highly trained medical team, it is a smooth, non-surgical procedure with temporary results, making it an accessible and safe option for all. As part of our treatments, we offer bespoke advice; however, we expect little downtime after treatment. Side effects are very rare, though they can include light headaches (about 10% of cases) and some bruising, swelling or redness around the site of injection. These will soon subside, and you can expect to see results from around 3 days after your treatment. Generally, results will last from 3 to 5 months, and can last even longer. Working wonders, results include smoother, fuller, and more youthful looking skin and, of course, beauty that radiates inside and out!

All About Fillers

Dermal fillers at MEDfacials in Cornwall

Fillers, also known as dermal fillers (dermal refers to the layer of skin underneath the skin’s surface), are injectable volumising treatments that come in various forms. Using a safe, cosmetic injectable solution such as Hyaluronic acid, they are used to restore and enhance the natural volume of skin and define facial features by increasing the skin's own supply of hyaluronic acid (a natural substance in the body that keeps skin supple and elastic). Achieving superb results, these injectables are often used to rejuvenate the face and fill out sagging or aging skin, as well as to plump features like the cheeks, chin, temple, jaw, under eye area (periorbital) and mouth area (perioral), and of course the lips. Harnessing the skin’s natural properties, the hyaluronic acid in each filler treatment not only boosts skin hydration, but also reduces fine lines and wrinkles and creates a brighter, fresher appearance and feel. Supporting facial structure and targeting bespoke areas, our treatments can be easily tailored to meet every client’s needs, so if you have a specific area in mind you’d like to focus on, please don’t hesitate to say so. We are happy to book you in for a skin consultation.

At MEDfacials, we take a ‘less is more’ approach to filler treatments for natural-looking results. Ensuring your skin gets the best treatment whilst respecting the individuality of your face, we promise the finest results in Cornwall. Performed by our expert team of highly-trained medical professionals such as Dr Stolte and our medical trained team , we only use the industry’s leading products, such as Juvederm, Profhilo and HArmonyCA. As there are lots of blood vessels and nerves in treatment areas, it’s vitally important to only receive treatment by an expert practitioner. This is to avoid any blocked vessels, tissue damage or a lumpy and uneven finish. At MEDfacials, all injections can be administered along with a numbing agent for comfort, and though we expect minimal to no side effects, there may be some mild redness, bruising, tenderness, swelling or itching. Creating beautiful, long-lasting results, our fillers will generally last between 9 to 24 months (depending on the filler used) with immediately visible results!
