MEDfacials Blog - Skin Boosters vs Profhilo: Which Is Right for You?

A complexion can look tired long before it looks wrinkled. Skin may feel less springy, make-up may sit differently, and that healthy, rested glow can seem harder to maintain. When comparing skin boosters vs Profhilo, the question is usually not which treatment is ‘better’, but which approach best suits your skin, concerns and desired outcome.

Both treatments use hyaluronic acid to improve skin quality from within. Neither is designed to change your face or create an overfilled look. However, they are not interchangeable. The product, injection technique, treatment schedule and results can differ, which is why a considered consultation matters.

Skin boosters vs Profhilo: the key difference

Skin boosters are injectable treatments designed primarily to improve hydration, smoothness and radiance. They place hyaluronic acid within the skin, where it attracts and holds water. Depending on the product selected, some skin boosters can also support skin texture, fine lines and elasticity over a course of treatments.

Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment often described as a bio-remodelling treatment. Rather than focusing on adding volume or treating individual lines, it is placed at specific points and disperses through the tissue. Its purpose is to improve overall skin quality, hydration and firmness by stimulating collagen and elastin production as well as providing deep hydration.

There is some overlap, which can make the terminology confusing. Profhilo is often grouped under the wider ‘skin booster’ umbrella, but it has a distinct formulation and treatment protocol. A good practitioner will look beyond the label and recommend what is appropriate for your skin rather than simply offering the most familiar name.

What skin boosters can improve

Skin boosters tend to be a particularly good option when dehydration is the dominant concern. Skin that looks dull, crepey or rough can often benefit from carefully placed micro-injections that replenish hydration and improve the skin’s surface quality.

They can be used in areas where the skin is fine or frequently exposed, such as the face, neck, décolletage and hands. Certain formulations may be selected for delicate areas, including around the eyes or lips, where the aim is to soften dryness and fine lines without changing shape or volume.

Results develop gradually. Most people notice that their skin feels more comfortable and looks fresher first, followed by a smoother texture and more even light reflection. This is not the same as erasing deeper lines or lifting loose skin. Skin boosters are best viewed as an investment in skin quality, not a substitute for treatments designed to restore facial structure.

A course is commonly recommended at the start, often with two or three sessions spaced several weeks apart. Maintenance depends on the product, your skin, lifestyle and the result you would like to preserve.

What makes Profhilo different?

Profhilo contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid and is administered using a small number of carefully planned injection points. It is not a dermal filler, even though both treatments contain hyaluronic acid. Dermal filler is shaped and placed to restore volume, contour cheeks, define the jawline or support folds. Profhilo is not intended to sculpt or build volume in this way.

Instead, Profhilo is chosen when the skin is beginning to lose some of its bounce and firmness. It can be especially useful for people who feel their face is looking a little less fresh or slightly lax, but who do not want a dramatic cosmetic change. The result should be subtle: better hydration, improved luminosity and skin that appears firmer and more resilient over time.

A standard Profhilo course usually involves two appointments around four weeks apart. Some people may benefit from a further session or a different plan, particularly when treating areas such as the neck, where skin quality can be more challenging. Maintenance is often considered around every six months, although this should always be tailored rather than automatic.

Choosing based on your main concern

The most useful starting point is to identify what you are actually seeing in the mirror. If your skin feels dehydrated, looks lacklustre or has a fine, papery texture, a tailored skin booster course may be the more direct choice. It can be an excellent option for improving the quality of the skin itself, particularly in precise or delicate areas.

If you are noticing a broader loss of firmness, elasticity or that healthy ‘plumpness’ associated with well-supported skin, Profhilo may be more suitable. It is often selected for overall facial rejuvenation where the goal is to improve the skin’s behaviour, not simply add hydration to one area.

There are also occasions where neither treatment is the whole answer. Prominent volume loss, deep folds or a lack of definition may call for carefully considered dermal filler. Significant sun damage, scars, enlarged pores or deeper lines may respond better to a treatment such as laser resurfacing or a medical skincare plan. Less is more, but that does not mean treating every concern with the same injectable.

What do the results look like?

The best results from either treatment are usually noticed rather than announced. You may look well-rested, healthier and more polished, while still looking entirely like yourself.

Skin boosters often give a dewy, hydrated finish and can improve how skin feels as well as how it looks. Profhilo tends to offer a wider improvement in glow, hydration and skin firmness, though it will not create the visible lift associated with surgery or replace volume where it has been lost.

Your baseline skin condition makes a difference. Smoking, sun exposure, stress, menopause, dehydration and an inconsistent skincare routine can all affect how skin responds and how long results last. Treatments work best when they sit alongside daily SPF, appropriate skincare and realistic expectations.

Comfort, downtime and safety

Both treatments involve small injections and should only be carried out following a proper medical assessment. Most clients find them manageable, and topical numbing cream may be used where suitable. You may have small bumps, redness, tenderness or bruising afterwards. These effects are usually temporary, but it is sensible to allow a little breathing room before an important event.

As with any injectable treatment, there are risks. These include bruising, swelling, infection, allergic reaction and, rarely, more serious complications. Product choice, facial anatomy, sterile technique and the ability to recognise and manage complications all matter. This is one reason medically supervised care should never be treated as an optional extra.

Treatment may need to be postponed if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection, are unwell, or have certain medical conditions. A thorough consultation should cover your medical history, medicines, previous aesthetic treatments and any tendency to cold sores or prolonged bruising.

Why a bespoke plan matters

It is tempting to ask for a treatment by name, particularly when a friend has had a lovely result. Yet the same product can be right for one person and disappointing for another. A dry complexion at 38 may need a different approach from thinning, sun-damaged skin at 58. Equally, someone who has previously had too much filler may benefit from a skin-quality treatment that restores freshness without adding further volume.

At MEDfacials, the focus is on understanding what will make a meaningful, natural-looking difference. That may be Profhilo, a skin booster, a combination approach or the reassurance that an injectable is not the best next step. There should be no pressure and no hard sell – only clear advice, realistic expectations and a plan built around you.

The right choice is the one that respects your face, your skin and your comfort with change. When treatment is selected carefully and delivered with clinical skill, the aim is simple: to help your skin look healthier, fresher and still completely yours.

I would just like to share after researching lots and lots regarding facial laser and other non surgical treatments. I found Dr Joe to be remarkably honest with a thorough listening to assessment. He was genuinely interested in my story, concerns and opinions. It wasn’t about any hard sell at all. I felt completely at ease and felt I could at last trust someone. So far I have had one Neogen treatment and two Derma V treatments. The aftercare is superb. And can always get a response to any query or concerns. I sincerely and wholly recommend Medfacials to anyone that has been disillusioned with the beauty industry. Medfacials is totally trustworthy 💯 Wendy
