MEDfacials Blog - Guide to Vascular Laser Treatment: What to Expect

Broken capillaries across the cheeks, persistent facial redness and small red marks can be difficult to disguise and even more difficult to treat with skincare alone. This guide to vascular laser treatment explains how a medically led approach can reduce visible blood vessels safely, helping your complexion look clearer while still looking like you.

What is vascular laser treatment?

Vascular laser treatment uses carefully selected wavelengths of light to target haemoglobin, the red pigment within blood vessels. The light is absorbed by the vessel, creating controlled heat that causes it to close down. Over time, the body naturally clears the treated vessel and its visibility reduces.

It is a precise treatment, not a one-size-fits-all solution. The right laser settings depend on the size, depth and colour of the vessel, as well as your skin tone, medical history and the area being treated. This is why a proper consultation matters. A qualified practitioner should assess whether the redness is vascular, inflammatory, pigment-related or a combination of factors before recommending treatment.

Vascular lasers are commonly used for thread veins and broken capillaries on the face, diffuse redness, cherry angiomas, some rosacea-related visible vessels and selected leg veins. They can also be helpful for redness around the nose and cheeks that has become more noticeable with age, sun exposure or changes in the skin.

What can a vascular laser improve?

The most satisfying results often come from treating a clearly defined concern, such as fine red capillaries around the nose or a cluster of cherry angiomas. These lesions tend to respond well because the laser has a distinct target.

Diffuse redness can be more nuanced. Rosacea, for example, is a long-term skin condition with potential triggers including heat, alcohol, spicy food, stress and sunlight. Laser treatment may reduce the visible redness and prominent vessels, but it does not remove the underlying tendency to flush. A thoughtful plan may combine laser sessions with gentle skincare, daily SPF and advice on identifying personal triggers.

Leg veins require particularly careful assessment. Small surface thread veins may be suitable for laser treatment, while larger blue, green or raised veins may need a different medical approach. Treating the wrong type of vein will not deliver the result you want, so an honest recommendation is far more valuable than promising that every visible vein can be lasered away.

Your guide to vascular laser treatment consultation

A consultation should feel informative, calm and entirely without pressure. Your practitioner will discuss what concerns you, examine the area and ask about your health, skin history and previous aesthetic treatments. They should also talk through realistic outcomes, including whether one session is likely to be enough or whether a course would give a better result.

You may be asked about medication that increases light sensitivity, a history of cold sores if the face is being treated, recent tanning, pregnancy or breastfeeding, active skin infections and any tendency towards scarring or pigmentation changes. These details are not a formality. They help determine whether treatment is appropriate now, whether settings need adapting, or whether it is safer to postpone.

For some clients, a test patch is recommended before a full session. This is especially useful for deeper skin tones, sensitive skin or when there is any uncertainty about how the skin may respond. At MEDfacials, treatment planning is centred on suitability and safety first, with doctor-led oversight and a bespoke approach rather than a hard sell.

What happens during the appointment?

The skin is cleansed and protective eyewear is worn throughout. A cooling method may be used to improve comfort and protect the surface of the skin. The practitioner then delivers brief pulses of laser energy across the treatment area.

Most people describe the sensation as a quick flick of an elastic band against the skin, followed by warmth. Small areas such as individual cherry angiomas or capillaries around the nose are usually quick to treat. More widespread facial redness takes longer, although appointments are still generally straightforward and do not require anaesthetic.

The visible response varies. Fine vessels may disappear, darken or look temporarily more pronounced straight after treatment. Cherry angiomas often darken before forming a tiny crust and fading. Facial redness can look warmer or flushed for a short period. These responses can be normal, but you should always be given clear aftercare guidance and a route to contact the clinic if you have concerns.

How many sessions will you need?

It depends on what is being treated. A small, isolated vessel may respond after one appointment, while diffuse redness or longstanding facial capillaries often needs a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart. Deeper or larger vessels can be more resistant, and new vessels may develop in future due to genetics, sun exposure, rosacea or natural ageing.

A good treatment plan is not about pursuing perfection. It is about achieving a meaningful, natural-looking improvement with a sensible balance of benefit, cost and downtime. Your practitioner should explain what is realistic for your skin rather than using heavily filtered before-and-after images as a benchmark.

Recovery and aftercare

Most people return to normal daily activities on the same day. Temporary redness, warmth and mild swelling are common, particularly on the cheeks or nose, and usually settle within hours to a few days. The skin may feel similar to mild sunburn immediately after treatment.

For the first 24 to 48 hours, keep the area cool and treat it gently. Avoid intense exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths and alcohol if these make you flush. Use simple, non-irritating skincare and avoid exfoliating acids, retinoids or scrubs until the skin feels settled.

Sun protection is essential. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to unwanted pigmentation changes, so use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily and avoid deliberate tanning. Do not pick at any tiny crusts that form after cherry angioma treatment. Let them lift away naturally.

Make-up can often be worn the following day if the skin is intact and comfortable, but your practitioner may advise a short break depending on the treatment area and reaction. Planning treatment ahead of a major event is sensible, particularly if you are prone to redness.

Are there risks?

When vascular laser treatment is performed by an experienced, appropriately trained clinician after a proper assessment, it is generally well tolerated. However, no aesthetic treatment is risk-free. Potential side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, blistering, crusting, prolonged redness and changes in pigmentation. Rarely, scarring can occur.

Risk is influenced by laser choice, treatment settings, skin type, recent sun exposure and aftercare. This is why lower cost should never be the only deciding factor. The quality of assessment, the technology used and the practitioner’s ability to recognise when not to treat are central to a safe outcome.

You should delay treatment if you have an active cold sore, rash, infection or sunburn in the area. Be open about medication and supplements too, including any that make your skin more sensitive to light. A reputable clinic will be cautious where caution is needed.

Preparing for your best result

Arrive with clean skin where possible and avoid fake tan on the treatment area. In the weeks before your appointment, minimise sun exposure and do not use sunbeds. If you are prone to cold sores and are having facial treatment, raise this at consultation so appropriate precautions can be considered.

Take photographs in consistent lighting before beginning a course. Visible changes can be gradual, and good baseline photographs are often the clearest way to see how far your skin has come. More importantly, choose a practitioner who listens to what you want to change and what you want to preserve.

Clearer skin is not about erasing every trace of colour or character from your face. With the right assessment, careful treatment and sensible aftercare, vascular laser treatment can soften unwanted redness and visible vessels while keeping the result refined, believable and completely your own.

I would just like to share after researching lots and lots regarding facial laser and other non surgical treatments. I found Dr Joe to be remarkably honest with a thorough listening to assessment. He was genuinely interested in my story, concerns and opinions. It wasn’t about any hard sell at all. I felt completely at ease and felt I could at last trust someone. So far I have had one Neogen treatment and two Derma V treatments. The aftercare is superb. And can always get a response to any query or concerns. I sincerely and wholly recommend Medfacials to anyone that has been disillusioned with the beauty industry. Medfacials is totally trustworthy 💯 Wendy
