MEDfacials Blog - A Practical Guide to Laser Hair Removal

Smooth skin should not require a daily negotiation with a razor, waxing appointment or irritated ingrown hair. This guide to laser hair removal explains what the treatment can realistically achieve, who it suits best and why a careful consultation matters just as much as the technology itself.

Laser hair removal is a medical-aesthetic treatment designed to reduce unwanted hair over a course of sessions. It can be an excellent long-term option for areas such as the underarms, bikini line, legs, face, chest or back, but it is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Your skin tone, hair colour, medical history, lifestyle and expectations all shape the safest and most effective plan.

How laser hair removal works

A laser delivers concentrated light into the pigment, or melanin, within the hair. That energy travels down to the follicle, where it creates heat that disrupts the hair’s ability to grow. The surrounding skin is protected through appropriate settings and cooling, but treatment must be tailored with care.

The laser can only treat hairs that are actively connected to the follicle in the right stage of their growth cycle. As individual hairs are at different stages at any one time, one session cannot treat every follicle. This is why laser hair removal is performed as a course, usually spaced several weeks apart depending on the body area.

The aim is long-term hair reduction, rather than a promise that every hair will disappear forever. Most people see a meaningful reduction in density and a finer, slower regrowth pattern. Occasional maintenance sessions may be helpful, particularly where hormones influence hair growth.

Is laser hair removal right for you?

The best candidates often have dark, coarse hair because the contrast between the hair pigment and the skin allows the laser to target the follicle efficiently. That said, suitable treatment is not limited to one complexion. Modern laser platforms and careful clinical assessment can allow many different skin tones to be treated safely.

Very fair, grey, white, red or light blonde hairs contain little pigment, so conventional laser treatment is unlikely to produce a worthwhile result. A reputable practitioner will be honest about this before you commit to a course. It is better to have a clear answer than to invest time and money in a treatment unlikely to meet your goals.

Hormonal hair growth can be more variable. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome, as well as menopause and some medications, may mean that maintenance is needed even after a successful initial course. Laser can still make day-to-day management much easier, but the plan should reflect the underlying cause rather than overpromise permanence.

Why a consultation and patch test matter

A consultation is where safe, natural-looking care begins. Your practitioner should ask about your medical history, current medication, previous hair-removal methods, skin sensitivity, recent sun exposure and any history of pigmentation changes or scarring.

Some medicines and skincare ingredients can make skin more sensitive to light. Active infections, open skin, a recent tan and certain medical circumstances may mean treatment needs to be delayed. Pregnancy is also commonly treated as a reason to postpone a course, not because laser hair removal is known to be harmful, but because there is insufficient research to support elective treatment at that time.

A patch test lets the practitioner assess how your skin responds and select appropriate settings. It is not an unnecessary formality. It provides a useful safety check, especially for deeper skin tones or anyone with a history of sensitivity. At a medically supervised clinic, this process should feel unhurried, transparent and entirely without pressure.

Preparing for your appointments

Good preparation helps protect the skin and improves the accuracy of the treatment. Avoid tanning, sunbeds and gradual tanning products before your session, as increased pigment in the skin can raise the risk of irritation or uneven pigmentation. Use high-factor sun protection on exposed areas throughout your course.

Do not wax, pluck, thread or use epilation in the weeks before treatment. These methods remove the hair root, leaving no target for the laser. Shaving is different: it preserves the follicle and is usually recommended the day before or on the day of your appointment, according to your clinic’s guidance.

Arrive with clean skin free from fake tan, heavy moisturiser, deodorant, perfume or make-up on the treatment area. If you are using prescription skincare or have started a new medication, let your practitioner know before treatment rather than assuming it will not matter.

What happens during a laser hair removal session?

The area is checked, cleansed and, where needed, shaved. Protective eyewear is worn by both you and your practitioner. The laser handpiece is then applied in a measured pattern across the area, often with integrated cooling to improve comfort and protect the skin.

Sensation varies. Many people describe it as a quick flick of an elastic band followed by a brief warm feeling. Smaller areas, such as the upper lip or underarms, can be completed quickly, while legs, backs and full-body areas naturally take longer.

Redness around the follicles and mild warmth are common immediately afterwards. This often settles within a few hours, although some people experience it for a day or two. Your practitioner should explain what is expected for your skin and when to contact the clinic for advice.

Aftercare that supports your skin

For the first 24 to 48 hours, treat the skin gently. Keep it cool, avoid hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, vigorous exercise and fragranced products on the treated area. Loose clothing can be more comfortable after body treatments, particularly around the bikini line or underarms.

Do not pick, exfoliate aggressively or attempt to pull shedding hairs out. In the days and weeks after treatment, hairs may look as though they are growing before they shed. This is a normal part of the process. Shaving is usually fine between sessions, but waxing and plucking should remain off the agenda.

Sun protection is essential. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to changes in pigmentation, and sun exposure can also affect whether your next session can go ahead as planned.

How many sessions will you need?

Most treatment plans involve a course of around six to eight sessions, but this is a starting point rather than a fixed rule. Facial hair often needs closer spacing because it cycles more quickly, while body areas may be treated at longer intervals. Your practitioner will adjust the timing based on the area, your response and your hair-growth pattern.

Consistency matters. Missing appointments by several months can make it harder to work with the growth cycle effectively. Equally, sessions should not be rushed too close together simply to finish the course sooner. A personalised schedule gives the treatment the best chance to work well.

You may notice reduced growth after the first few sessions, but results tend to build gradually. The hair that returns is often patchier, softer and easier to manage. Progress photographs can be useful, especially when changes are subtle from week to week.

Choosing a clinic with care

Laser hair removal is widely available, but the quality of assessment, equipment and supervision can vary considerably. Look for a clinic that explains which technology it uses, carries out a proper consultation and patch test, and is willing to say when treatment is not suitable.

Price matters, but it should not be the only consideration. Very low-cost offers can conceal rushed appointments, generic settings or limited support if your skin reacts. A good clinic will make the costs and likely number of sessions clear, answer your questions directly and put your wellbeing ahead of a quick sale.

For patients in Cornwall, MEDfacials offers doctor-led assessment and bespoke laser plans designed around safety, comfort and realistic outcomes. The goal is not simply less hair, but the confidence of knowing your treatment has been selected thoughtfully.

The right course can free up time and reduce the irritation that comes with constant hair removal. Start with an informed consultation, be patient with the process, and choose care that helps you feel more comfortable in your own skin – while still looking like yourself.

I would just like to share after researching lots and lots regarding facial laser and other non surgical treatments. I found Dr Joe to be remarkably honest with a thorough listening to assessment. He was genuinely interested in my story, concerns and opinions. It wasn’t about any hard sell at all. I felt completely at ease and felt I could at last trust someone. So far I have had one Neogen treatment and two Derma V treatments. The aftercare is superb. And can always get a response to any query or concerns. I sincerely and wholly recommend Medfacials to anyone that has been disillusioned with the beauty industry. Medfacials is totally trustworthy 💯 Wendy
