MEDfacials Blog - Clinic Treatment for Acne Scars That Works

Acne may be long gone, yet the marks it leaves can still affect how you feel when you catch your reflection or go without make-up. The right clinic treatment for acne scars is not about chasing flawless, filtered skin. It is about improving texture, softening visible indentations and helping your skin look healthier while still looking completely like you.

At a medically led clinic, scar treatment starts with a close assessment rather than a one-size-fits-all package. Acne scars vary considerably, and so do the skin types, lifestyles and recovery preferences of the people who have them. A thoughtful plan makes a meaningful difference to both your result and your comfort throughout the process.

Why acne scars need an individual approach

Not every mark after acne is a scar. Flat red or brown marks can linger after spots have healed, particularly in skin that is prone to inflammation or pigmentation. These marks may fade with time, targeted skincare and appropriate light or laser-based treatments, but they respond differently from indented scars.

True acne scarring occurs when inflammation affects the deeper layers of skin and disrupts collagen during healing. Some scars are narrow and deep, often called ice-pick scars. Others have sharply defined edges, known as boxcar scars, or a gentle rolling appearance caused by fibrous bands beneath the skin. It is common to have more than one scar type in the same area.

This is why a treatment that works well for a shallow rolling scar may have limited effect on a deep, narrow scar. Skin tone also matters. The wrong settings, poor aftercare or treatment at the wrong time can increase the risk of prolonged redness or post-inflammatory pigmentation. Safety, proper technique and realistic expectations should always lead the conversation.

Clinic treatment for acne scars: the main options

A consultation should identify what is causing the visible texture and recommend treatment accordingly. Often, the best outcome comes from combining methods over time rather than relying on one procedure.

CO2 laser resurfacing

CO2 laser resurfacing can be an excellent option for improving overall skin texture, fine lines and certain atrophic acne scars. The laser creates carefully controlled microscopic channels in the skin, stimulating collagen remodelling as the area heals. Over the following weeks and months, the skin can become smoother, firmer and more even in appearance.

It is a more intensive treatment than a superficial facial, so downtime must be factored in. Redness, warmth, swelling and peeling are expected during the early healing phase. Depending on the treatment intensity and your skin’s response, you may need a period of social downtime before you feel ready to return to normal plans.

CO2 laser treatment is not suitable for everyone at every point in time. Active acne, certain medical conditions, a tendency to abnormal scarring, recent sun exposure and some medications may affect whether it is appropriate. A proper medical assessment helps ensure treatment is selected and timed safely.

Microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling

Microneedling uses very fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, encouraging new collagen formation. It can suit mild to moderate textural scarring and is often chosen by those looking for a treatment with less downtime than ablative laser resurfacing.

Radiofrequency microneedling adds heat at targeted depths beneath the surface. This can support collagen stimulation while limiting some of the heat delivered to the upper layers of the skin. It may be particularly helpful for rolling scars and general texture concerns, although the best option always depends on the scar pattern and skin assessment.

These treatments are usually performed as a course. Results develop gradually because collagen remodelling takes time. You may see early freshness after treatment, but the more meaningful changes tend to emerge over several months.

Subcision for tethered scars

Rolling scars sometimes remain indented because they are attached to deeper tissue by fibrous bands. In this situation, resurfacing alone may not fully release the depression. Subcision is a technique that carefully releases these tethering bands beneath the skin, allowing the surface to lift.

There can be temporary swelling, bruising and tenderness afterwards, particularly in areas such as the cheeks. However, for the right scar type, subcision can be an important part of a plan that creates a more even result than laser or needling alone.

Targeted treatments for deeper scars

Deep ice-pick scars can require more focused treatment. Depending on clinical assessment, this may involve a highly targeted chemical reconstruction technique, sometimes called TCA CROSS, or other scar-specific procedures. These are not treatments to select from a menu without assessment. Precision matters, and so does appropriate aftercare.

For some depressed scars, carefully placed dermal filler may also offer temporary support by lifting the area. This is not always the first choice and will not be right for every scar, but it can be considered as part of a wider plan when the goal is a subtle, natural-looking improvement.

What results can you realistically expect?

The aim of professional scar treatment is improvement, not the promise of perfect skin. Acne scars are changes in the skin’s structure, so they cannot simply be erased. Yet a well-chosen course of treatment can noticeably soften their depth, reduce shadowing and make make-up sit more smoothly.

Your result depends on the type and severity of scarring, your age, skin quality, healing response, ongoing acne activity and how consistently you follow aftercare. Deep scars may improve substantially but still remain visible in certain lighting. This is not a failure of treatment. It is an honest reflection of the fact that scar revision works with living tissue and a gradual healing process.

The most natural results tend to come from measured treatments, spaced appropriately, with time allowed for the skin to regenerate. Less is more is often the sensible approach.

Preparing for treatment and protecting your skin afterwards

Before beginning scar treatment, active acne should be under reasonable control. Treating inflamed breakouts can create new marks while you are trying to improve existing ones. A clinician may recommend adjusting your skincare routine first, particularly if you are using active ingredients that could make your skin more sensitive.

After treatment, careful sun protection is essential. Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to pigment changes, and daily broad-spectrum SPF should become a non-negotiable part of your routine. You may also be advised to pause exfoliating acids, retinoids and other active products while the skin heals.

Avoid picking, scrubbing or trying to speed up peeling with home remedies. The skin needs a calm, protected environment to repair well. Your clinic should provide clear aftercare guidance and explain exactly what is normal, what to avoid and when to get in touch.

Why medical oversight matters for scar treatment

Acne scar treatment can involve powerful technologies and procedures that deliberately stimulate change within the skin. The quality of the device matters, but the person assessing your skin and delivering the treatment matters just as much.

A doctor-led consultation provides the space to discuss your medical history, previous treatments, current skincare, pigmentation risk and expectations without pressure or a hard sell. It also allows for an honest recommendation if a treatment is unlikely to offer enough benefit for you.

At MEDfacials in Truro, treatment planning is centred on clinical judgement, skin safety and subtle improvement. You should feel informed about the likely benefits, the limitations, recovery time and costs before deciding whether to proceed.

When to book a consultation

If scars affect your confidence, you do not need to wait until they feel severe to seek advice. Early assessment can be particularly useful if acne is still active, as controlling inflammation and avoiding picking can help limit future scarring.

Bring any questions about previous treatments, skincare or medication to your appointment. Good scar treatment is never rushed. With the right clinical plan and patience for the healing process, smoother, more even-looking skin can be a realistic and worthwhile goal.

I would just like to share after researching lots and lots regarding facial laser and other non surgical treatments. I found Dr Joe to be remarkably honest with a thorough listening to assessment. He was genuinely interested in my story, concerns and opinions. It wasn’t about any hard sell at all. I felt completely at ease and felt I could at last trust someone. So far I have had one Neogen treatment and two Derma V treatments. The aftercare is superb. And can always get a response to any query or concerns. I sincerely and wholly recommend Medfacials to anyone that has been disillusioned with the beauty industry. Medfacials is totally trustworthy 💯 Wendy
