MEDfacials Blog - Menopause Skincare for Changing, Sensitive Skin

A moisturiser that once worked beautifully can suddenly sting. Foundation may settle into lines by lunchtime, while redness, dryness or breakouts appear without warning. Menopause skincare is not about chasing a younger face. It is about responding thoughtfully to skin that is behaving differently, so it feels comfortable, healthy and recognisably yours.

For many women, these changes arrive during perimenopause, sometimes years before periods stop. They can feel frustrating, particularly when the rest of your routine has remained the same. The good news is that small, well-chosen changes can make a meaningful difference, and clinical treatments may help where skincare alone is not enough.

Why skin changes during menopause

Oestrogen plays an important role in skin hydration, collagen production, elasticity and wound healing. As levels fluctuate and then decline, the skin may produce less collagen and natural moisturising factors. It can become thinner, drier and less resilient, while reduced elasticity may make lines and laxity more noticeable.

These changes are not identical for everyone. Some notice persistent dryness and sensitivity; others develop adult acne around the jawline, more visible pores, flushing or pigmentation. Hot flushes can also aggravate redness, especially in skin already prone to rosacea.

Lifestyle has a part to play too. Poor sleep, stress, alcohol, smoking, UV exposure and a demanding routine can all affect how the skin looks and feels. Menopause may be the trigger for change, but it is rarely the only factor worth considering.

Menopause skincare starts with barrier support

When skin becomes reactive, it is tempting to introduce several new products at once. In practice, a simpler routine is often more effective. The first priority is supporting the skin barrier, the protective outer layer that helps retain water and defend against irritants.

Choose a gentle, non-foaming cleanser that leaves the skin comfortable rather than tight. Follow with a fragrance-free moisturiser containing ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, squalane or niacinamide. These do not replace lost collagen, but they can improve hydration, softness and the appearance of fine dehydration lines.

Apply moisturiser while skin is slightly damp, particularly in the evening. If your face feels dry but also develops congestion, use a lighter lotion in the morning and a richer cream at night rather than relying on harsh exfoliation. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, and stripping it often creates more irritation.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or above is equally valuable. UV exposure accelerates collagen breakdown and can make pigmentation, fine lines and uneven tone more prominent. Sunscreen is not a dramatic fix, but it is one of the most reliable ways to protect the progress made with both skincare and in-clinic treatments.

Introduce active ingredients slowly

Retinoids, vitamin C and carefully selected exfoliating acids can all be useful, but changing skin may tolerate them differently. If you already use a retinoid comfortably, continue gradually. If you are new to one, begin two evenings a week and build up only if your skin remains settled.

A low-strength retinoid can support smoother texture and collagen production over time. Vitamin C in the morning may help with dullness and uneven pigmentation, while gentle acids can improve surface texture. However, there is a trade-off: more is not better when the barrier is compromised. Stinging, flaking or persistent redness are signs to pause, simplify and seek professional advice.

Avoid combining several potent actives on the same night until you know what your skin can manage. For many women, consistency with a few appropriate products gives better results than an ambitious ten-step routine.

When breakouts, redness or pigmentation are part of the picture

Menopausal acne deserves a different approach from dry, flaky skin. Hormonal shifts can increase the influence of androgens, contributing to breakouts around the chin, jawline and neck. Heavy occlusive products may worsen congestion for some, although they are helpful for others with very dry skin. This is why a personalised recommendation matters.

Persistent redness, flushing or burning should not simply be treated as sensitivity. Rosacea, eczema and contact dermatitis can become more apparent around this stage of life and need the right diagnosis before investing in new products or procedures.

Pigmentation also requires care. Darker patches may be linked to years of accumulated sun exposure, hormonal history or post-inflammatory marks from spots. Daily sunscreen is essential, while targeted medical-grade skincare and appropriate laser treatment may offer a more effective route than repeatedly buying brightening products that do not suit your skin.

Clinic treatments that can complement your routine

A good home routine creates the foundation, but it cannot fully replace collagen or address every concern. Medical aesthetic treatments can be considered when they are selected for your skin quality, medical history, priorities and tolerance for downtime.

Skin boosters such as Profhilo may be suitable for people whose main concern is crepey, dehydrated-looking skin and declining elasticity. Rather than changing facial shape, they are designed to support skin hydration and quality. Results are subtle and develop over time, which appeals to those who want to look refreshed while still looking like themselves.

For lines formed through repeated expression, carefully placed anti-wrinkle injections can soften the appearance of movement without creating a frozen result. Dermal filler may be appropriate where there has been a loss of facial volume or support, but it is not the answer to every line. A less-is-more approach is particularly important when the skin is becoming thinner and more delicate.

Laser treatments can be valuable for pigmentation, redness, sun damage and texture, depending on the concern and skin type. CO2 laser resurfacing can improve more significant textural change and fine lines, but it involves a planned recovery period and is not appropriate for everyone. Vascular or pigmentation lasers may be a more focused option for specific concerns with less downtime.

The right choice depends on what is actually driving the concern. Dryness needs a different plan from volume loss; rosacea needs a different plan from sunspots. A thorough consultation should include an honest discussion about likely outcomes, risks, recovery and whether treatment is necessary at all.

A calm approach delivers better results

It is understandable to want a quick fix when your reflection changes quickly. Yet menopause skincare tends to respond best to a measured plan: protect the barrier, use sunscreen daily, introduce actives with care and reassess after several weeks. Skin turnover takes time, and treatments should complement that process rather than overwhelm it.

Do not overlook the wider picture. Sleep disruption, stress and changes in wellbeing can be as challenging as the visible changes. Speak to your GP or menopause specialist about symptoms that affect your quality of life, including hot flushes, mood changes, joint pain or sleep. Hormone replacement therapy may be appropriate for some people, but it is a medical decision and not a skincare treatment.

If your skin is sore, persistently inflamed, suddenly breaking out or changing in a way that concerns you, seek advice before adding more products. At MEDfacials, a doctor-led consultation can help separate short-lived irritation from concerns that may benefit from medical skincare or carefully selected treatment.

Your skin does not need to be corrected to deserve care. With the right support, menopause can be a time to refine what works, let go of routines that no longer serve you and feel comfortable in your own skin again.

I would just like to share after researching lots and lots regarding facial laser and other non surgical treatments. I found Dr Joe to be remarkably honest with a thorough listening to assessment. He was genuinely interested in my story, concerns and opinions. It wasn’t about any hard sell at all. I felt completely at ease and felt I could at last trust someone. So far I have had one Neogen treatment and two Derma V treatments. The aftercare is superb. And can always get a response to any query or concerns. I sincerely and wholly recommend Medfacials to anyone that has been disillusioned with the beauty industry. Medfacials is totally trustworthy 💯 Wendy
