MEDfacials Blog - How to Restore Thinning Hair With Medical Care

A widening parting, more hair in the shower drain or a receding hairline can feel unsettling, particularly when it seems to happen quickly. If you are wondering how to restore thinning hair, the most useful first step is not to buy the latest supplement or shampoo. It is to understand why your hair is changing, because the right treatment depends entirely on the cause.

Hair thinning is common in both women and men, and it is not always permanent. Some types of shedding settle once a trigger has been addressed. Other forms, particularly pattern hair loss, usually need consistent treatment to protect the hair you still have and encourage fuller-looking growth over time. A medically guided plan offers clarity, realistic expectations and an approach that puts your wellbeing first.

Why hair becomes thinner

Hair grows in cycles. Most hairs are in a growing phase at any one time, while a smaller number are resting and shedding. When that balance changes, you may notice increased shedding, reduced density or hairs that grow back finer than before.

The most common cause is androgenetic alopecia, also known as female or male pattern hair loss. This is influenced by genetics and hormones. In women, it often appears as diffuse thinning over the top of the scalp or a broader parting. In men, it may begin at the temples or crown. The follicles gradually produce finer, shorter hairs, so change tends to be gradual rather than sudden.

A different pattern, telogen effluvium, can cause a noticeable increase in shedding a few months after a physical or emotional stressor. Illness, surgery, a significant period of stress, rapid weight loss, childbirth, restrictive dieting and some medications can all be relevant. Thyroid conditions, iron deficiency and other nutritional deficiencies may contribute too.

Patchy loss, scalp pain, scaling, redness or shiny areas of skin should always be assessed promptly. These signs can point to inflammatory, autoimmune or scarring conditions, where early treatment matters for preserving follicles.

How to restore thinning hair: start with a proper assessment

A good hair restoration plan begins with listening. The timing of the change, family history, menstrual or menopausal changes, recent illnesses, medication and diet can all help identify what may be happening. Your clinician will also examine the pattern of loss and the condition of your scalp.

Blood tests may be appropriate where symptoms or history suggest a medical contributor, but they are not automatically required for everyone. The aim is to investigate with purpose, rather than take a one-size-fits-all approach. If there is an underlying health issue, treating it is often an essential part of supporting recovery.

Photographs taken in consistent lighting can be surprisingly valuable. Hair changes slowly, and it is easy to judge progress from one difficult hair day. Clinical photographs allow a more objective comparison over several months.

It is also worth being realistic about the goal. In many cases, treatment is about slowing further loss, improving density and making existing hair appear healthier and fuller. Complete restoration is not always possible, particularly where follicles have been inactive for a long time. Subtle, natural improvement is often the most meaningful outcome.

Treatments with a place in a personalised plan

Topical minoxidil

Topical minoxidil is one of the best-established options for pattern hair loss in both women and men. Applied regularly to the scalp, it can prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle and help follicles produce thicker hairs. Results are gradual. Most people need to use it consistently for at least three to six months before assessing whether it is helping.

Some people experience temporary increased shedding in the early weeks. This can be alarming, but it may reflect hairs moving through the cycle before new growth develops. Scalp irritation or unwanted facial hair can occur, particularly if the product spreads beyond the intended area. The correct strength and formulation should be chosen with professional guidance.

Prescription treatment where appropriate

For some patients, prescription medication may be considered after a full medical assessment. Finasteride is used for male pattern hair loss and works by reducing the effect of a hormone that contributes to follicle miniaturisation. It is not suitable for everyone and requires a clear discussion of potential side effects, including sexual and mood-related effects.

Some women may be suitable for hormonal treatments or low-dose oral minoxidil under medical supervision. Oral minoxidil is not right for every patient and can cause side effects such as fluid retention, changes in blood pressure, palpitations or increased body hair. It should never be treated as a casual cosmetic purchase. Suitability, medical history and ongoing monitoring matter.

Platelet-rich plasma treatment

Platelet-rich plasma, often called PRP, uses a small sample of your own blood. The blood is processed to concentrate platelets, then carefully injected into areas of thinning scalp. Platelets contain growth factors that may support follicle activity and scalp health.

PRP can be a helpful option for some people with early pattern thinning, particularly when it is part of a broader programme rather than presented as a standalone miracle treatment. Research is promising, but results vary and maintenance sessions are usually needed. It is less likely to be helpful where follicles are no longer active or where untreated inflammation is present.

At MEDfacials, hair restoration is approached as a bespoke medical plan, with treatment choices based on your pattern of loss, health history and the result you hope to achieve. There is no pressure and no hard sell – only straightforward advice about what is likely to be worthwhile.

Low-level light therapy

Low-level light therapy uses specific wavelengths of red light to stimulate cellular activity around the hair follicle. Home devices and clinic-based options are available. Evidence suggests it may improve hair density for some people with pattern hair loss, although it requires regular use and patience.

This can suit people looking for a non-invasive addition to a plan, but it is not a replacement for diagnosis. As with PRP, the benefit is usually greatest when viable follicles are still present.

What supplements, shampoos and lifestyle changes can realistically do

Hair supplements can be useful when a genuine deficiency has been identified. Iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12, zinc and protein intake are all relevant to healthy hair growth. But taking high-dose supplements without evidence of a deficiency is not necessarily helpful and can occasionally be harmful. More is not always better.

A varied diet with sufficient protein, steady weight management and good sleep can support overall hair health. If you are recovering from illness, major stress or a restrictive diet, these foundations may be particularly important. However, lifestyle changes alone do not usually reverse inherited pattern hair loss.

Thickening shampoos, scalp serums and carefully chosen styling products can improve the appearance and feel of fine hair. They may reduce breakage or make hair look more voluminous, but they cannot reactivate dormant follicles. Be wary of products that promise dramatic regrowth in a matter of weeks. Hair biology does not work that quickly.

Gentler styling is worthwhile. Avoid repeated tight hairstyles, harsh bleaching and excessive heat where possible, especially if hair is already fragile. These habits will not treat the root cause of hair loss, but they can reduce avoidable breakage and help the hair you have look its best.

When to seek medical advice sooner

Do not wait for a routine appointment if hair loss is sudden, severe or accompanied by scalp symptoms. Patchy bald areas, itching, burning, scaling, pain, eyebrow loss or changes elsewhere on the body all deserve medical attention. The same applies if shedding follows a new medicine, significant illness or unexplained changes in weight, energy or periods.

It is understandable to want an immediate answer, but hair restoration is usually a longer-term process. Most effective treatments need months, not days, and stopping treatment can allow pattern hair loss to progress again. A plan should fit comfortably into your routine, budget and medical needs so that it is sustainable.

The most reassuring way forward is to replace guesswork with a considered assessment. When you understand the cause of thinning, you can choose treatment with confidence and give your hair the best possible chance to recover naturally over time.

I would just like to share after researching lots and lots regarding facial laser and other non surgical treatments. I found Dr Joe to be remarkably honest with a thorough listening to assessment. He was genuinely interested in my story, concerns and opinions. It wasn’t about any hard sell at all. I felt completely at ease and felt I could at last trust someone. So far I have had one Neogen treatment and two Derma V treatments. The aftercare is superb. And can always get a response to any query or concerns. I sincerely and wholly recommend Medfacials to anyone that has been disillusioned with the beauty industry. Medfacials is totally trustworthy 💯 Wendy
